St. John-Sacred Heart Sixth-Eighth Grade

St. John-Sacred Heart recognizes the changing needs of middle level students by utilizing a departmental approach to instruction.  The 6-8 grade program emphasis is on further development of their character, moral excellence & strengths.

The students will excel in their math abilities and have aptitude for one of the pre-algebra or algebra classes.  Those students accomplishing the algebra course are able to take advance high school courses.  The encouragment of creative problem-solving is perceived.  St. John-Sacred Heart School forms three teams of students annually to participate in the Xavier Math Bowl.  The successful places in the competition reinforces our accomplishments in our students.

The students will acquire a thorough knowledge of the traditions of Western Culture and the impact that those traditions have had on other cultures around the globe.  Field trips are taken to sites that illustrate major themes of both United States history and Western Cultural traditions.  They will develop skills in reading expository materials, reasoning, speaking, and writing.  A principal focus of the Social Studies program is to encourage students to be active self-learners who are able to use their developing listening, reading and writing skills in understanding the connections between ideas and events in the past with present-day occurrences.  A special effort is made to integrate important works of both United States and world literature within the Social Studies program.

The Language Arts program offers comprehensive instruction and practice in grammar, spelling, reading, writing and speaking.  Thematic literature units are frequently used to supplement the core basal reading materials.  Attention is given to recognized novels, plays and poetry that model high-quality writing accomplishments.  The students in  Language Arts receive one-on-one coaching to help identify composition weaknesses as well as to build on existing talent and strengths.  Student play-writing, fiction, poetry and report writing are integrated with direct instruction in writing technique.  The sixth through eighth grade all participate in Forensics and are encouraged to enter literary and/or essay contests.

Computer Instructions will be reinforced with increasing word processing skills, internet activities/projects.  Power Point presentations are also introduced to the students.

Your child's religious inspirations are nurtured through daily prayers and weekly celebration of the Eucharist.  The weekly participation in the liturgy unites our school with the community.  Seasonal devotions and service projects influence our students in everyday life occurrences.

The students have an interactive, hands on approach to learning about the world around us through the use of experiments, field trip and demonstrations.

The sixth through eighth graders have a music elective which includes, band, chorus, and music appreciation.  A school choir sings at the weekly liturgy.

The students further enhance their creative imagination through art classes.  They will support each other in weekly physical educations lessons.  A health class will also help your child to maintain an understanding of the human body and worlds opportunties available to them.  The Spanish language lessons will be expanded with each grade level as the years progress. The students will have a better understanding of the words as they relate to every day life.

The extra-curricular opportunities continue to instill a team concept with each practice and game.  The students who participate in basketball, volleyball or softball will enhance their individual strengths and Christian values.

The sixth through eighth graders meet at St. John-Sacred Heart School in Sherwood.
